Expanding The Circle 08.17.11
As instructors, we not only emphasize learning the dances we teach, but also build and reinforce the pure enjoyment of dance. Beth and I talk frequently about our Dance Jungle (the social dance scene) and how to best be part of that aspect of the dance community.
Frequently, we discuss how to approach the Dance Jungle in order to get the best of it for each of us. There is another side of that process that we also feel strongly about and that is giving back.
We never lose track of where we have come from and want each of you to do the same. We all started somewhere and those days can be remembered for the emotions that were sometimes tough to overcome. Fear of rejection, looking silly or just not being wanted as part of the community felt real and terrifying. The fact that you are still a part of the community is testament to you overcoming or at least neutralizing those fears.
For those of us who do remember those days, we see the new faces showing a reflection of those dark days. Men and women who are trying to become part of our village and feeling those same emotions we ran up against back then. It is time to give back to the community.
A big part of overcoming your insecurities rest in the efforts others made to make you welcome. Being asked to dance, given the respect of your efforts as you feel your way to higher levels of dance, patiently encouraging you to continue were all big components in your process. Those mentors gave you a gift and it is now your turn to offer that same gift to others.
It is never too early to give back either. We all feel at some level we are not adequate to be one of those mentors, but your growth in the community, whether as a still young seedling or big tree in our forest, your help will make someone's day and encourage another to greater efforts in dance. As accomplished as any of us get, there is always room for more people to enjoy the passion we have in dance. In fact, this passion is meant to be shared and should be at every opportunity.
So, remember where you came from. Look for those that are coming along after us and light that trail so that they may see what's ahead. Enjoy the chance to share a wonderous gift with those who will come to appreciate it with the same zeal you do...
Make sure you ask them to dance!
