Dive In! 08.04.09
Weekends immersed in dance create a focused opportunity to enjoy your passion of choice and expand on the tools to make your dancing grow. A key aspect of any endeavor is participation. You must be involved as much as you can to get the full impact of the events and workshops. There are times to make them mini-vacations, but by-and-large, you should end the weekend drained and in a cloud just wishing they could go on and on...
Workshops are great for a number of reasons. Using our weekend coming up with Jordan and Tatiana as an example:
- Top level talent with cutting edge information.
- In these workshops, the patterns they use are great in and of themselves, but there is an underlying theme they stress to teach you a great technique to apply in many areas of your dance.
- During their stay, the top talent lend drawing power to bring many more dancers to play with each time.
- The mix of different dancers also creates new energy and your world of fellow dancers expands quickly.
- •Opportunities to dance more with all of these amazing people, INCLUDING Jordan and Tatiana give you more chances to learn and practice what you absorb.
Beth and I have found that the added energy and opportunities have more dancers with an appetite for more lessons. The learning just seems to get started when a new dancer gets involved and sees the possibilities!
So, we find that our dance lesson schedules get strengthened after hosting these events. There are some dance teachers that struggle with this concept and feel that these national instructors take money away from them. However, your growth and interest gets you more involved in the dance community. With your growth, others around you find themselves attracted to what is making you a better dancer. This results in more opportunities for the instructors and lend itself to more effort to bring events and top flight talent into our area to keep the momentum growing!
Getting more involved in these events is sometimes out of your comfort zone. Beth and I have both been there. One of the best ways to beat that handicap is join up with your fellow students and make it a party for all. By coming together, you have ready partners to keep you busy. When you do work up nerve to ask another dancer you are unfamiliar with, your success can translate to helping others in your group approach another dancer and so on. On the rare occasion a rejection occurs, your party can help you overcome that situation and get back out there to try again.
Beth and I try to accomodate everyone that asks us. There are times when we need a breather, but even when we decline, we try to keep tabs and get back with those dancers we had to pass on earlier. We are not perfect, but we remember what it was like when we were the new kids on the block. We feel it is important to make everyone feel welcome and a part of our village.
